Weller 107

My first review just so happens to be one of my favorite value bourbons of all time.  Price/performance, it’s tough to beat this classic, especially if you’re lucky enough to find it for retail under $30!  Weller Antique 107 is that bourbon.  A 7-year old bourbon bottled at its namesake at 107 proof.  Unfortunately this whisky has become so popular amongst bourbon lovers alike that it’s now an allocated bottle, tough to get (at retail), and usually comes at a premium of 3-4x when you do see it in stores.  I’ve seen these bottles fetch as high as $200 at mom and pops shops and online retailers.  Is it worth it?  Let’s review.

Right away what I love about this whisky is its high proof.  At 53.5% abv, it packs a punch, and great value for $30 retail.

On the nose – the high proof is evident with a nose-tingling welcome when enjoyed neat.  Spice, brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla notes fill your glass.  The bottle label itself says floral notes, and I can see that but I definitely nose the other flavors more.

On the palate – big and bold.  Spicy and peppery, with vanilla sweetness, and a dark cherry aftertaste.

On the finish – a nice loooooong burn which is what you’ll usually get with higher proof whiskies like this.  Notes of rye (ironically since this is a wheated bourbon), caramel, and a peppery spice on the tongue.

Summary – I would buy this, and buy it again with one caveat… I wouldn’t spend more than $50 on it.  It’s bold, delicious, high proof, and enjoyable on the nose, palate, and finish.  You really can’t ask for much more from a $30 bourbon.  If you find it on the shelves of your local liquor store, be ready to pay a premium to buy it.  The chain stores like Total Wine and Bevmo will get an allocation from time to time that will sell out within hours, but they are still your best bet at getting these gems at retail pricing.
